Give Context, Not Control

Lead by handing people the strategy, goals, and constraints, then let them decide the details.

Borrowed from Netflix's culture memo, which describes leading by "context, not control." Read the original source.

Changes a rule or role · Minutes to start · Anyone on the team can start it

Try this first

Before you delegate a decision, hand over the full context behind it. The goal, the constraints, what matters. Then let them decide.

Use it when

Leading a team through fast AI change where rules can't keep pace.

Skip it when

People need judgment and enough context to use it. A brand-new team, or a situation with no room for error, may need direction first. And this is no license to withhold the decisions people need you to make.
