Coordinate and act

Lead by the Piece

Leadership rotates with the task

Pick who leads each piece of work by fit to that problem, and rotate as the work changes, rather than defaulting to rank.

Borrowed from the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, which chooses a different group of players to lead each piece it performs. Read the original source.

Changes a rule or role · Minutes to start · Anyone on the team can start it

Try this first

Ask openly who is best placed to lead the next piece, and name them.

Use it when

Leadership is fixed by title but the work needs different expertise from one task to the next.

Skip it when

It needs leadership that can move. Where accountability must sit with one named person, legally or structurally, it does not apply, and it should never become a way for a leader to duck responsibility.
