Coordinate and act

Red Lines and a Bridge

Each side names its limits and proposes a fix

In a deadlock, each side names what it cannot accept and, in the same breath, offers one step toward the other.

Borrowed from the indaba, a Zulu and Xhosa tradition of community discussion, which negotiators used to break a deadlock at the 2015 Paris climate talks.

One session · Minutes to start · Anyone on the team can start it

Try this first

Ask each side two questions. What can you not accept, and what is one thing you could offer.

Use it when

A team is stuck restating positions and going in circles.

Skip it when

It needs enough safety to state real limits. Where people are afraid to be truthful, or one side holds all the power and will not move, surface that first or you will collect fake limits.
